How to make Hot Toddy cocktail with Sherry

The Hot Toddy cocktail has become a cold-weather staple over the last few hundred years. Int he past used as a cure for the cold, or to heat you up on a frigid winter day, this cocktail checks all the boxes as its approachability and functionality can be enjoyed by any kind of drinker. The Hot Toddy is said to date back to the late 18th Century in British ruled India and is defined as a beverage made of alcoholic liquor with hot water, sugar, and spices. Traditionally made with whisk(e)y (Scotch was the original whisky since that is what the British produced and consumed), this cocktail can be made with your alcohol of choice and given how many wonderful spirits we have access to today, it is worth experimenting to see which Toddy is right for you. For our Toddy, we chose to use oloroso sherry in place of the whisk(e)y as it is bold enough to use in lieu of a spirit yet gives the cocktail a nice layer of complexity. Additionally, by using sherry, we have cut the ABV content by at least half, making this a very good low ABV alternative to the original Hot Toddy.

Which Sherry is best for a Classic Hot Toddy

Although we think oloroso sherry works best in this cocktail, we encourage you to try the other dry, oxidative sherries (amontillado and palo cortado) as the ABV and overall flavor of the sherry is strong enough to cut through the honey, lemon, and spices. A fino or manzanilla sherry could work, but due to how light in flavor they are, you would need to add a little extra sherry to balance out the cocktail.

About Lustau Don Nuño Oloroso

For our Toddy, we chose the Lustau Don Nuño Oloroso as it has a nice presence in the drink and won’t kill your pocketbook either. It is for us the best sherry for a hot toddy cocktail. Since we are diluting this drink with either hot water or hot tea, using a more expensive and overly aged sherry would not be wise as the complexity of the wine will get loss once it is diluted.
